Tutoring Job Requirements

We’re always looking for dedicated, reliable, and enthusiastic individuals who have excelled academically and are ready to commit to at least one full school year. We also value people eager to grow their skill set, develop their professional communication skills, and work efficiently as part of the BrightSparkz team.

If that sounds like you, here’s what we’re looking for:

Minimum Requirements:

Currently studying at a university or have completed tertiary studies
Achieved at least 70% in Matric for the subject(s) you want to tutor
Available at least two afternoons or evenings per week
Ability to prepare lessons ahead of time
Prepared to commit for the duration of the academic year

Additional Advantages:

Your own car or access to reliable transport
Willingness to travel up to 10km from home for lessons (20km round trip)
Specialists in the following subjects: Mathematics, Afrikaans, CAT, Accounting, IT, Physical Science and Life Science (other subjects most welcome!)

How to become a tutor?

Becoming a BrightSparkz Tutor is simple, and we’re here to guide you through every step of the process. Here’s how it works:

Please make sure you meet our minimum requirements listed above. These include academic performance, availability, and a willingness to commit to the academic year.

Send Through Your Application

Complete our short application form or email us if you are interested. We’ll need some basic details to get started.

Complete the Application Process

We’ll ask you to upload your CV, academic transcripts, and a short motivation. You may also be invited to complete an interview or short screening exercise.

Set Up Your Online Profile

Once accepted, you’ll create your tutor profile in our system. This helps us match you with the right learners based on your subjects, location, and availability.

Onboarding & Training

You’ll receive a quick onboarding session and access to our tutor training resources. These will equip you with tips, tools, and insights to deliver excellent tutoring sessions, even if it’s your first time.

What if I haven’t tutored before?

No experience? No problem. If your application is successful, tutors are guided through our onboarding process, including a short tutor training course to become the best tutor possible. It’s packed with practical tips, helpful tools, and proven strategies to help you feel confident from your first lesson. We’ll give you everything you need to get started and support you every step of the way.

Tutor Job FAQs

What is the pay rate?

Your hourly rate depends on your experience, the subjects you tutor, and the type of lesson. Rates increase as you gain experience and take on more advanced roles. You’ll also earn more for certain in-demand subjects or specialised roles, such as concessions tutoring or university-level support.

How often are tutors paid?

Tutors are paid monthly via EFT (electronic funds transfer). Payment is processed by the 15th of the following month for all lessons completed in the previous month. You can monitor your tutoring by logging into the dashboard to get an accurate understanding of your hours and earnings.

Do you supply lesson material, or must tutors prepare everything themselves?

Tutors are expected to prepare their own lesson content in advance based on the learner’s needs. However, we provide guidance, resources, and support when needed — you’re never alone.

Can I tutor more than one subject?

Yes, definitely. You can tutor across multiple areas if you meet the academic criteria for more than one subject and feel confident teaching them. This also increases your chances of being matched with learners.

Do I get paid for travel?

In most cases, we place tutors within 10km of their home, so travel is minimal. If you’re required to travel more than a 20km round trip, we’ll discuss a travel allowance before you commit to the placement.

For longer lessons (1.5–2 hours), travel compensation is generally not included unless the total round trip exceeds 30km.

If additional travel costs arise during your placement and weren’t pre-agreed, we’ll do our best to negotiate a solution with the client when the package renews.

If the client declines, and you’re not happy to continue without compensation, you may give us four weeks’ notice so we can arrange a replacement.

How flexible is the schedule? Can I set my own hours?

Yes, flexibility is one of the best parts of tutoring with BrightSparkz. You choose your availability and only accept placements that fit your schedule. Most lessons happen in the afternoons or evenings, so you’ll need to be available for at least two afternoons or evenings per week.

That said, we do ask that you commit to each learner for the full academic year to ensure consistency and real impact. While you have control over how many clients you take on and when you work, this isn’t a short-term or drop-in job — we’re looking for reliable, consistent, and committed tutors.

How long will it take to get my first client?

Tutoring placements aren’t always guaranteed, and they entirely depend on the needs of the clients and learners, as well as your personal tutoring preferences and where you are located. Make sure that you complete your tutor application in full, with as many subjects and grades that you feel confident tutoring.
